This historic mission caused massive boosts in the patriotism and confidence of Americans, received support from political figures, showcased American superiority in space, and provided mankind with many new technologies, and a wealth of information on multiple scientific fields. There were many events taking place at the time of the moon landing which affected the Apollo 11 flight. After World War 2, relationships between the Soviet Union and America grew tense. Since the Soviet Union was under communist rule, nearby countries such as Vietnam were afraid that the Soviets would force their rule upon them (Spangenburg 13). This difference in way of life was what sparked the Cold War which was a tragic war which consisted of the U.S and the soviet union fighting for influence and prestige (Cole, 11). This war sparked a more peaceful competition known as the space race. By 1957 the Soviets developed a rocket which could carry a small satellite into earths orbit, and by means of this technology, they launched Sputnik 1, the first satellite in space (Riper 14). In response the US created its own space program, NASA in October of 1958. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space after his Vostok spacecraft first reached earths orbit (Spangenburg 1 7). Till this point the Soviet Union were defeating the Americans in space, but John F. Kennedys historic speech to congress was a major turning point. John. F Kennedys speech led to many successful endeavors in space for the United states, such as project Mercury, and project Gemini, but never had anyone reached the moon. This is why project Apollo was created (Enghland,137) Apollo 11 was a major triumph from a technological standpoint providing humans with many new technologies, and providing data in multiple scientific fields. To fit the needs of the Apollo mission many technologies had to be created many of which eventually made it to the consumers market, such as nonstick coating, dehydrated foods, miniaturized electronics and many more (Riper 17). The Apollo mission actually did provide taxpayers with tangible results and had a major impact on technologies today. Apollo 11 also created the foundation for the phone since, the phone is made is made of miniaturized electronics. When the astronauts reached the moon they set up seismic experiments, to check for lunar quakes, and meteor strikes. These experiments also sent data about the inner structure of the moon. The Apollo 11 astronauts set up laser reflectors to find the exact distance of the moon from earth, and they brought a solar wind panel to trap atomic particles from the sun to study solar rad iation (Green 21). This shows how landing on the moon, impacted our knowledge in multiple scientific fields, but also completed its main purpose of giving mankind information about the moon. Throughout Shakespeare’s Othello, the major theme of jealousy is apparent. The tragedy Othello focuses on the doom of Othello and the other major characters as a result of jealousy. In Shakespeare’s Othello, jealousy is portrayed through the major characters of Iago and Othello. It utterly corrupts their lives because it causes Iago to show his true self, which in turn triggers Othello to undergo an absolute conversion that destroys the lives of their friends. Othello represents how jealousy, particularly sexual jealousy, is one of the most corrupting and destructive of emotions. With the title that Ralph Ellison chose for this book one could easily conclude, without even reading it, that the text is science fiction and deals with the super natural. Upon actually reading it however it becomes painfully obvious that the main character of â€Å"Invisible Man† is quite visible indeed. Fictional or not, he is a regular human being made of flesh and bone, and he even says so in the first sentences of the book. So how can this black man possibly deem himself invisible? First draft In this essay, I will be examining the character of Lord Capulet in the William Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet but first I shall give you some background information on the writer. Shakespeares birthday is a topic which has been argued about quite a bit, some sources say that his birthday was St. Georges day (23rd April) 1564, others however suggest that this is just an estimate based on the fact that he was baptised on April 26th1564. The play was set 150 200 years before it was written and the characters were dressed and the set made accordingly but all Shakespeares characters acted and talked like the people of Shakespeares time. The plot of the play is that Romeo and Juliet, two star-crossed lovers from families that have been enemies for years, fall in love Romeo is exiled for murdering Juliets cousin Tybalt, shortly after marrying Juliet. Lord Capulet, Juliets father, knows nothing of the marriage and in an effort to stop Juliet crying (for Romeo of course but he thinks for Tybalt) he promises to arrange for her to marry Paris, a young and wealthy man who finds himself in love with Juliet although she doesnt reciprocate. This makes her feel worse because she is already married to Romeo and she is shown to be very religious and so she is confused, should she go against the church, the law and her heart, marry Paris and commit bigamy or go against her father and tell him thanks but no thanks? When Juliet refuses to marry someone Lord Capulet has promised her to, she is met by a violent and angry father, this is how any Elizabethan father would react to his daughter defying him. In the opening scene lord Capulet is portrayed by Shakespeare as an old but hot-headed man who still thinks he is young enough to fight bring me my long sword ho but his wife soon tells him otherwise a crutch, a crutch, why call you for a sword?. This tells the audience that he is a violent man even with only the lightest provocation. In the second scene of the play Lord Capulet is shown to be more compassionate, he loves his daughter and says he will give her the choice of who to marry and not make the decision for her and that she should wait two years because he thinks early marriages dont work. He also says that he and Lord Montague can easily keep the peace, even though they were ready to fight, to kill, each other earlier in the play. This shows that he is not worried about not fighting Mountague because Mountague cant fight him either so Capulet hasnt shown weakness which is what Shakespeare shows to be his worst fear because he cares so much about his reputation he dreads being made to look weak. This shows a man who wants only the best for his daughter and cares about what people think this explains why he is angry in Act 3 Scene 5 because his daughter wont accept the best he can give her. Lord Capulet is portrayed as a man who likes to be in control of his family and loses his temper at Tybalt when he says he will kill Romeo at the Capulets party, many people in the audience in Shakespeares England would be shocked that a member of the family younger and less powerful than Capulet dare challenge his authority.
